Phantom Limb Proposal
‘Phantom Limb’ is composed of the tree limbs of the American Beech, Fagus grandifolia. The limbs, floating on rebar, will dance through the space at different heights, creating a still life. The limbs are salvaged from dead trees, killed by Beech Leaf Disease, a disease that is eradicating this incredible native tree. This piece is part eulogy for the beech and part celebration of the rebirth of life found in dead wood as fungus and insects colonize the plant tissue.
The work speaks to the loss we’re collectively experiencing with extinction, but also the persistence of life as new creatures thrive in the decay we’ve left behind. The fragility in suspending the limbs is contrasted with their muscular beauty. In their shadow we are left to experience both presence and absence.
The drawing included is intended to show the gesture of the work, the size and location will be adapted to the space available.
