		<description>Cecil Howell — 
Art, Design, and Research


Cecil Howell is an artist with a practice that includes visual art, design, and landscape architecture. Her work studies the land, probing the geological, cultural, and ecological histories of place in order to understand how we are shaped by the ground beneath us and how we, in turn, shape it. After 9 years of working for landscape architecture firms, include Hargreaves, Future Green, and Margie Ruddick Landscape, Cecil created her own studio, Object + Field in order to expand her practice beyond the built environment and into artistic explorations of the human imagination. &#38;nbsp;


Since opening Object + Field, she has collaborated with the renowned artist, Maya Lin and designer, Edwina von Gal. She has been awarded numerous residencies and her work was featured in several exhibitions and magazines, including Wonderground Journal (Fall 2021) and Orion (Spring 2021). Additionally, she frequently collaborates with scientists helping them visualize their research and data.

	This series of drawings begins with the snowfall of this past winter, observing the texture, movement, and color of fleeting moments on the ground. They operate as a kind of nearsighted index of the winter landscape. At this scale, mounds become mountains, folds resemble crevasses, small depressions read as craters. The viewpoint slips: it is unclear whether we are looking down from high above a planetary surface or crouched close to the ground, our faces inches from the snow. Photographs and glitches, embedded in some pieces, further unsettle the view, hinting at other scales, contexts, and knowledge. These disruptions trouble the drawings’ quiet sublime.


Part of the difficulty of grasping climate change is that it demands we think across immense scales—spatial and temporal. The gradual accumulation of molecules released through ordinary routines—driving to the grocery store, cooling our homes, charging our phones—quietly reshapes how heat moves through the atmosphere, setting planetary transformations in motion.

These drawings linger in that tension between the intimate and the planetary. They move between the ground at our feet and the vast systems that surround it, returning our attention to the fragile present, inviting us to reconsider our place within it.


Pastel offers a tactile, layered process that echoes the material behavior of snow itself. Pigment is built up, blended, and partially lifted away, creating surfaces that register accumulation, erosion, compression, and melt—the same forces that continually remake the winter ground.

	Through cutting, blasting, drilling, and digging, humans now move more than thirty billions tons of earth each year - a restless rearranging of the planet’s surface that rivals rivers, glaciers, waves, and wind. Mountains are quarried into cities; riverbeds become foundations; stone travels farther in a single human lifetime than it once did in millennia. Our cities, the terminal moraines of our time, are dense geological accumulations built from distant quarries, river valleys, and ancient seabeds. They are landscapes of assembly, where deep time is pulverized, transported, and paved into the everyday.&#38;nbsp;
This project explores this vast reorganization of matter through an intimate scale: large graphite drawings of small pebbles found on the streets of New York City. These stones - found at the edges of our roads and sidewalks - are residual fragments of immense extractive forces. Yet in drawing them, I am not attempting to catalogue extraction. Instead, by slowly enlarging and rendering each pebble, I invite a shift in perception.&#38;nbsp;
Against the incomprehensible span of geological time, the two weeks it takes to complete a drawing register as brief. And yet, it is precisely within this imbalance that meaning emerges. The drawings acknowledge that while I cannot comprehend deep time in its entirety, I can choose how I attend to its remnants. In this way, symbols of extraction and displacement are reimagined as sites of reflection.&#38;nbsp;This work is deeply inspired by Joshua DiCaglio’s Scale Theory: A Nondisciplinary Inquiry.&#38;nbsp;

	A crack in the sidewalk, a new record high temperature, a
memory of this same corner in winter, a glance at the map: as the mind flitters
between these places, scales, and thoughts, what is the experience of being in
landscape? This series, Between Two Mirrors, is centered on this question. 


The installations begin with impressions of the ground; removed from their context they shed their scale and flip, multiply, obscure and deform in the mirrors, glass, and stone. The installation renders the landscape as a swirl of particulate matter: a metamorphosis of bits of images, terrain, and experiences that accumulate, however briefly, into a groundless place.

The scientist Lauren Oakes writes that a
forest is ‘a stream of matter and energy’, a fitting description for a city as
well. ‘Phantom Limb’ presses pause on this stream for a moment, arresting the
flow of growth and decay long enough for us to bear witness. Rising from the
ground as a grid of wooden dowels, the sculpture creates a scaffolding on which
branches float. The branches, in turn, provide the cross supports necessary to
strengthen the orthogonal structure of the grid. ‘Phantom Limb’ &#38;nbsp;flickers between movement and suspension, hewn
and raw wood, the grid and organic forms; creating a tension that energizes the
sculpture.

		<description>2024. These infinitely obscure livesThis is an archive of the ephemeral. It is a series of drawings, primarily in pastel on paper, of the ground.

Each drawing begins with a memory of the ground in mind, but moves away from a particular place/time as
the composition and emotion of the drawing unfolds. In this way they are part diagram and part dream, part map and part memory. The series highlights the accumulation of subtle compositions that make our days, but also speak to the fragility I feel, we all feel, so acutely right now; with a gust of wind everything changes.

		<description>2022 - 2023. A still life


These works are fueled by a series of questions regarding the landscape (What is between the known and unknown?&#38;nbsp;Where does an object end?&#38;nbsp;What can’t the eye see? How do plants hold memories?
How does desire shape the science of botany? How does desire decompose?). They are not attempts to answer the questions, but rather make room for the questions to hang in the air.

	At the edge of the eastern seaboard lies a small island densely vegetated with firs, spruce, and a thick carpet of moss. The fog and clouds move through the landscape quickly and with conviction, obscuring a sunny day in minutes, and leaving as swiftly. This installation is a meditation on the movement of colors in this landscape, the flashes of neon green, buoy pink, sea blue, that appear and disappear with the shifting light.

Under the Weather &#124; Monoprint &#124; 15” x 11” each

“A new physician,
pre-19th century, was required to know that, for example, the
inhabitants in a city exposed to hot winds suffered from bodily flabbiness, had
humid heads, and irritable bowels unsupportive of wine; that women suffered
from excessive menstruation, infants from asthma, and other adults from
dysentery and hemorrhoids”&#38;nbsp;

The Victorian age
brought about an increasing bifurcation of knowledge regarding the natural
realm. Science and rational thought came to dominate our understanding of the
world, from agriculture to medicine, rendering the everyday experience of
knowledge as “folk-lore” and superstitions. While much of the specifics of
wind-driven illness is no longer held as fact, there is increasing relevance in
thinking about the winds in relationship to our health and the “poetics of
pathology.” Pollution, whether from factories or highways, carbon dioxide
emissions, and the increasing desiccation of the land, shape local health. The
prevalence of certain geo-determined diseases has given rise to monikers like
“cancer alley” and “asthma alley”.&#38;nbsp; 


This series of
prints examines wind patterns, including the named winds, like Sorocco,
Haramann, and Pamperos, and the global wind from this summer, when the air we
breathed seemed increasingly threatening as covid and wildfires spread. This
invisible force was rendered by pressing cotton balls, the fibers that encase
the cotton seed and evolved to be carried by the wind, into cotton paper.
